The Gothic basilica of Santa Maria de Castelló d’Empúries has its own structure and dimensions of a cathedral, a dignity that failed despite several attempts in this direction by the Counts of Empúries. One of the most interesting examples of Gothic religious architecture of Catalonia.
Its construction started in the 13th century, continued throughout the 14th century and finished at the beginning of the 15th century, when the façade with the outstanding marble porch was built. The Gothic Mediterranean interior contains single Romanesque baptism fonts, an outstanding alabaster main altarpiece from the 15th century, two sarcophaguses of local Counts, a Gothic stained glass window, an altarpiece from the 18thI century and many other fascinating features.
